Edmonton has spoken. The speeches were in the form of piles of excellent entries. Every submission was quite different and all were outstanding ideas. The finalist pool had to be increased. It just had to be.
We have 8 barricades currently being built and these finalists will be judged (judges are TBA) .
August 15th / be at the 124 Street Grand Market to marvel at these barricades; works of art and function, while enjoying the delights that they adorn.
August 16th-25th / flock to the Fringe Festival grounds in awe of both the festival and 8 barricades that may change your life.
Updates, maps and of course, dioramas to come.
This is a competition. An exploratory one.
The existing barricades make our festivals, events and markets look like construction zones. Let's see what local designers can do to re-design them in a contest.
Barricade should fit within an 8'Wx3'Hx2', shall weigh between 20-30 lbs., shall be portable + durable + stable, shall be bright + light-reflective and/or lit, shall be able to mount signage, can be made of your choice of materials.
Submit your sketch and proposal including dimensions, materials and any other details that will help describe how well your design works for this application. Please keep your budget within $100 - $150. 5 will be shortlisted and asked to produce prototypes for display next to existing barricades at markets and festivals in mid to late August. $200 honorarium to be given to each of the finalists (5) upon production and delivery to site. Judges top pick receives one $300 cash prize.
July 19th, 2013: Deadline for proposals
July 23rd: Announce finalists
August 15th - 29th: Display and judging of barricades (unveiling at 124 St. Grand Market)
Competition open to Edmonton & Area residents. Designers retain all rights to their sketches and finalists retain all rights to their barricade. It's yours forever.
