“Even while I was living rough for a while, the fact that I was working on the Downtown Proud! crew gave me the incentive to get up every morning and come to work." says Mark, one of the original crew members with Downtown Proud!, a social enterprise started four years ago by Boyle Street Community Services and the Downtown Business Association.
Every day for the past four years – in all kinds of weather - a crew of five formerly homeless people scour a 30-square block area looking for litter. Last year, the crew collected 144,000 litres of garbage from downtown streets.
Downtown Proud! is now looking to expand – from three hours a day to six hours a day during the summer months.
The City has committed $50,000 toward our expansion. It’s up to us now to raise a further $58,000 to meet all our operating costs. With the help of the Downtown Vibrancy Task Force, companies that work in the city core will be approached to meet the target.
We could use your support. Leave a kind comment on this page, “like” us or a make a donation and it will go a long way to showing that Edmontonians care.
As Mark says: “Downtown Proud! gave me confidence in myself. After years of not caring, I was able to find pride in what I did.”
